How to Crack a Job Interview: Complete Guide

A step-by-step walkthrough of the whole interview process - what to do before, during and after, so nothing catches you off guard.

1

Before the Interview

Research the company - what they do, their products, recent news, and the role you're applying for. Re-read the job description and match your own skills against it. Keep your resume, ID proof and certificates ready in a folder (or PDF, for online interviews). Plan your outfit and your route (or check your camera/mic/internet if it's a video call) the night before, not the morning of.

2

During the Interview

Arrive - or log in - 10 minutes early. Greet with a smile and a firm handshake (or a clear "Good morning/afternoon" on video). Sit straight, maintain eye contact, and listen fully before answering - don't interrupt. Speak clearly and don't rush; it's fine to pause for two seconds to think before you answer. Keep your answers structured: what you did, how you did it, and what the result was.

3

Common Questions & How to Answer Them

"Tell me about yourself" - give a 60-90 second summary of your background, key skills and why you're a fit, not your entire life story. "Why do you want this job?" - connect your goals to what the role and company actually offer. "What are your strengths/weaknesses?" - pick a real weakness and explain what you're doing to improve it, don't dodge the question. "Do you have any questions for us?" - always have at least two ready; it shows genuine interest.

4

After the Interview

Send a short thank-you email within 24 hours if you have the interviewer's email - thank them for their time and briefly restate your interest. If you don't hear back within the timeline they mentioned, a polite follow-up after a week is completely normal. Whatever the outcome, note down the questions you were asked - it's the best practice material for your next interview.
